Every spring, the trees wake up, and the sap starts to flow. It’s maple syrup season—one of the sweetest times of the year at Glenna Farms! The 2025 season brought us a more traditional winter, which set the stage for a steady and satisfying syrup harvest. From tapping trees to bottling golden goodness, here’s how the season unfolded.
A Wintry Start to a Sweet Spring
This year’s winter was long and cold—just the way maple trees like it. That chill helped create the perfect conditions for a healthy sap flow. We began tapping our maple trees on March 6, 2025. With over 36 to 40 inches of ground frost, the early sap runs were slow. Sap flows best when daytime temps rise above freezing and tree roots start to warm up. We needed to be patient, but we knew the sweet rewards would be worth the wait.
Sap Starts to Flow
Once the frost began to leave the ground, the trees responded. The sap started flowing more regularly, and by March 13, 2025, we were making our first batch of fresh maple syrup! That’s when our sugarhouse really came alive. The steam rolled out of the vents, and the sweet smell of syrup filled the air.
Because the daytime temperatures stayed cooler than usual, most of our syrup ended up being Amber Grade—that beautiful, golden syrup that’s light in color and rich in flavor. Toward the end of the season, when it finally warmed up, we produced our usual 10–15% of Dark Grade syrup. Dark syrup is bolder and stronger in flavor and perfect for baking or drizzling over waffles!
The Season Wraps Up
We boiled our last batch of syrup during the week of April 7, 2025. That marks the end of a season we’d call better than average. Our crop came in slightly above normal, and the quality of the syrup was excellent.
We couldn’t be more grateful. The weather lined up just right, our trees were healthy, and our team worked hard to make sure every drop of syrup was collected, boiled, and bottled with care.
Maple Syrup by the Numbers
Let’s take a quick look at the highlights:
- Tapping Started: March 6, 2025
- First Syrup Made: March 13, 2025
- Frost Depth: 36″ to 40″
- Syrup Grade: Majority Amber Grade; 10–15% Dark Grade
- Season Ended: Week of April 7, 2025
- Crop Yield: Slightly above normal
Why the Weather Matters
The weather plays a huge role in maple syrup season. Ideal conditions are cold nights and warm days. When those temps swing just right, the sap runs strong. This year’s classic winter set the stage for a traditional season. While it meant we had to wait a bit longer for the sap to really start flowing, the end result was light, flavorful, and full of character syrup.
Cooler daytime temps also help keep bacteria from growing in the sap. That means cleaner sap and higher quality syrup. This year, nature worked with us, not against us—and the results were delicious.
A Season to Remember
This year, we welcomed visitors, gave tours, and shared our love for sugaring with the community. Many guests watched as sap turned into syrup right before their eyes. They asked questions, tasted samples, and learned why Glenna Farms maple syrup is so special.
Our team is proud of what we accomplished this season. From checking taps to boiling sap to bottling syrup, it takes a lot of hard work—and heart—to make every bottle of Glenna Farms maple syrup.
Fun Names for the 2025 Season:
To celebrate a successful season, we came up with a few fun names you might see on labels or in the sugarhouse:
- “Golden Patience” – A nod to the slow start but golden outcome.
- “Frosty Flow” – Highlighting the thick frost and eventual sap surge.
- “Amber Dreams” – Because most of our syrup this year was that perfect amber color.
- “Sweet and Steady” – For a season that wasn’t rushed, but just right.
- “The Chill Batch” – Cooler temps brought cooler syrup tones.
A Community Tradition
Maple season isn’t just about syrup—it’s about community. We love that families, schools, and curious visitors make Glenna Farms a part of their spring traditions. Whether it’s your first time or your fiftieth, watching syrup being made is a sweet memory that sticks with you.
This year, we heard stories from grandparents who used to tap trees with buckets, kids who asked a hundred questions, and visitors from out of state who made the trip to taste real Wisconsin maple. That’s what makes all the work worth it.
What’s Next?
Even though the season is over, the sweetness continues. Our shelves are stocked with fresh 2025 maple syrup. Whether you like it light or dark, there’s something for everyone. Plus, our syrup pairs perfectly with everything from pancakes to coffee to roasted vegetables.
We’re also already preparing for next season. Trees need care year-round. We’ll be checking lines, watching weather patterns, and keeping our woods healthy to be ready when the sap starts to flow again in 2026.
Until then, Taste the 2025 Season!
This year’s syrup is the real deal. It’s smooth and sweet, and it’s made the old-fashioned way—with care, craft, and a little help from nature.
